What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Base rate for Form 1040 is $85. Additional forms (i.e. Sch A, Sch C, Sch D, Sch E) range from $0-$35 depending on complexity. Main state forms and electronic filing is always included in the base rate. Additional states may be extra. All fees are discussed before the forms are completed, so there are no hidden charges.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I am new to the area, so I like to meet new clients face-to-face. We set up a time and go over their information. If it is complete, their tax return will usually be ready in less than an hour. They are free to wait or I will send the completed information to them in a secure digital format for review before electronic filing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a Registered Tax Preparer with the IRS. I have an A.S. in Business, but more importantly I have 15+ years of additional training and experience.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Our family has been in the tax business for six decades. When I was little, I would sit at an extra desk in the office, filling out last years’ forms for imaginary clients. I can’t imagine doing anything else!
What types of customers have you worked with?
Mainly individuals, small businesses, and farms, as well as some small corporations.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I recently volunteered to provide free tax prep service for seniors. A lot of senior citizens don’t realize that they still qualify for credits and refunds even though their income is generally not taxable. I love hearing people’s stories, what kind of career they had, how they spend their retirement, all about the grandkids!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Professional income tax preparation does not have be extremely expensive! Do your research and compare. You want someone with experience, but also someone who will listen to your needs and concerns. There is no one-size-fits-all scenario.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Ask if the professional has experience with their particular situation and what tax forms apply to them specifically. Make sure that state forms and filing fees are included in the price. Find out what payment methods they accept and if your fee can be taken out of your refund, if applicable.
